And then there was one.
Mardy Fish was overwhelmed by No. 3 seed Novak Djokovic yesterday in their fourth-round match, losing 6-3, 6-4, 6-1, in just under two hours in Arthur Ashe Stadium. His exit leaves Sam Querrey as the only American remaining in the field.
“He kicked my butt,” Fish said. “He played great.”
Fish, the 19th seed, had chances to get back into the match, including a golden opportunity in the second set. Trailing 3-2 with Djokovic serving, Fish raced out to a love-40 lead, earning three break points to tie the set.
But Djokovic rallied to win the game, and went on to win eight of the last 11 games in the match.
Djokovic controlled the match from start to finish, forcing Fish to scramble all over the court. Fish looked like he was laboring throughout the match, but refused to make any excuses for the defeat, crediting Djokovic for the way he played.
“I’ve got a few things that are going on, but none of which had any effect on the match,” he said. “I think it kind of comes down to just a matter of, you know, trying to put together the best plan of attack to play him, and then execution.”
